New Release: Calila 2003-2015 Official 'Distiller's Edition' C-si: 2-475 43%
Bottle #カリラ(CAOL ILA)
Smooth and warm, like a Lagavulin-style Calila.
Calila CAOL ILA 2003-2015 OB 'THE Distiller's Edition' C-si: 2-475 43% DOUBLE MATURED IN MOSCATEL CASK WOOD
The aroma is sweet, with notes of heated apricot and plum, chocolate-covered orange, fish stock broth, smoked ham, smoked nuts, and strong peat.
On the palate, it has a smooth mouthfeel with viscosity and a mellow impression. The sweetness is rich and full-bodied, with the umami of barley and fish stock broth, and a surprisingly light finish.
[Good/Very Good]
This is the latest Distillery Edition of Calila 2003, bottled in 2015. Previously, this series was released under the name 'Double Matured,' but this edition is matured in Moscatel (sweet Sherry) casks. It has a smooth mouthfeel with concentrated, rich fruit sweetness and depth characteristic of Calila, retaining the umami and strong peat typical of Islay malt. Usually, Calila feels more crisp and dry, but this cask imparts a sweet, warm character. If blind tasted, I would say Lagavulin. The aroma doesn't resemble Calila at all, and despite the clear flavoring from double maturation, there's a surprising sense of unity without feeling forced. That said, it's undoubtedly Diageo's skillful cask usage.
This is an unusual Calila, distinctively double-matured. Setting aside whether it's a typical Calila, I found it to be an exceptionally delicious Islay malt.
