The aroma was mellow Sherry, plum, apricot jam, milk chocolate, strong molty, shell minerals or briny notes, and a faint peat.
When drinking, it had a concentrated mouthfeel with plum, orange, pleasant barley sweetness, gentle sweet notes, strong briny, mineral, shell umami, and a faint peat aftertaste.
[Good/Very Good]
Recently bottled from Springbank Distillery, this is Hazelburn 2003 matured for 13 years.
It was vatting of whisky matured in multiple Oloroso Sherry casks.
While there is a faint sulfur-like element reminiscent of dashi soy sauce, not to the extent of being an off-flavor, the nuances from Sherry casks such as concentrated fruits and chocolate are clearly present.
Additionally, although the 13-year aging retains strong malty elements, it doesn't feel harsh and is accompanied by a pleasant umami. The gentle sweetness, strong saltiness, and mineral brininess typical of Springbank were clearly felt separately from the cask influence.
Indeed, one can feel that Hazelburn is also a Springbank whisky.
The peat is faint, and compared to recent Springbank releases, it's quite mild. It gave the sensation of drinking a recently released Sherry-aged Springbank with light peat.
