A youthful yet well-finished Islay malt. Caol Ila CAOL ILA 2004-2015 10yo GM 'EXCLUSIVE' for JIS #306658 60.1% One of 311 bottles, Refill American Hogshead The nose features youthful barley, fresh citrus, green apple, cider, vanilla, oak, honey, seawater, seafood dashi, strong peat and smoke. On the palate: citrus, honey's rich sweetness, tightening oak, fresh green plant notes, slightly briny, spicy, with a long finish of strong peat. [Good/Very Good] Gordon & MacPhail recently bottled this Caol Ila 2004, 10-year-old expression for the Japan Import System. While short-matured with youthful characteristics, some aspects are masked by strong peat. However, there's no obvious immaturity, and the positive qualities of young bourbon casks (like green apple and vanilla) are clearly present without feeling forced. This was a refreshing cask strength Islay malt, though its youthfulness does bring some sharpness. While the drinker may need to choose carefully due to this, it's a well-crafted malt in its own right. #Caol Ila (CAOL ILA)
