This Auchentoshan with such a sherry character might be the first of its kind.
Auchentoshan AUCHENTOSHAN 2004-2016 12yo OB Distillery Cask Hand Bottled #935 59.6%
The aroma features a sweet recent sherry, plum, slight grape notes, chocolate, cinnamon, a solid malty character, with fresh herbs and woodiness adding depth.
On the palate, it expands with a rich plum jam and chocolate sweetness, balanced by tannic woody notes, herbs, and a savory malty character. The finish is long and rich.
[Good/Very Good, Interesting]
There's a 200ml small bottle sold at Auchentoshan Distillery, and this is the latest hand bottling, a 12-year-old distillate from 2004, number #935.
This is a rare short-matured sherry cask malt, and I approached it with some anticipation. However, it exceeded my expectations, delivering a well-crafted profile with excellent recent sherry character, diverse rich fruitiness, and elements like chocolate, spices, herbs, along with a savory malty backbone.
I was cautious about the paper-like nuances I'm not particularly fond of, but they didn't bother me at all.
Despite its young vintage and relatively short maturation, the balance between malt and sherry was fascinating, making it a highly appealing malt.
There were discussions about similarities to Suntory's sherry casks, particularly those from Yamazaki. Upon reflection, I can see the resemblance.
Since both are Suntory-owned distilleries, it's possible that similar casks exist in quantity.
By the way, during a previous visit to Auchentoshan, I recall seeing many Château Lagrange wine casks, which are also present at Yamazaki and Hakushu.
