[Good/Very Good]
This is a 10-year-old MacDuff from Asta Morris, bottled by Maltoyama in celebration of their 3rd anniversary. While I haven't heard of other stores releasing commemorative bottles for anniversaries, this is a passionate release by Semono-kun, the owner of Maltoyama who's also a malt enthusiast. The aroma combines vibrant fruit notes like orange oil and apple with vanilla, coconut, and strong oak characteristics typical of bourbon casks, all harmonizing with youthful yet refined barley notes. The palate is smooth without roughness, clearly expressing high-quality bourbon cask flavors with sweet honey depth and a structured finish. The appropriate water addition provides gentle drinkability, making it a pleasure to sip.
While 10 years might seem short for single cask maturation unless it's peated malt, this bottling demonstrates how a good bourbon cask and skillful dilution can create a well-balanced whisky. This release clearly shows that maturation duration isn't the sole determinant of malt quality or completeness.
Congratulations on Maltoyama's 3rd anniversary. While I can't understand the funa-sshi (a local mascot) merchandise, I appreciate Semono-kun's humility and dedication to malt. Keep up the great work!
