New Release: Benromach 2009-2017 Official Sassicaia Wood Finish 45%
Bottle #ベンローマック(BENROMACH)
It was a fragrance I wanted to drink after letting it sit for a while.
Benromach 2009-2017 Original Bottling 45% Sassicaia Wood Finish, one of 7783 bottles
The aroma features sweet wafers with milk chocolate, plum, a spirit-like note reminiscent of grappa, and a gradual peat.
When drinking, it starts with a soft mouthfeel, then a peppery alcohol sensation, followed by the rich sweetness of milk chocolate and plum jam. There's also a stronger peat note in another dimension.
[Okay/Good]
The new release Benromach 2009, aged for approximately 8 years. After being first filled in bourbon casks, it was matured for 28 months in barrels from Sassicaia, a famous Italian wine. Due to the relatively long maturation period, the wine cask aroma is well developed, with sweetness clearly present in both aroma and flavor. While there are nuances of spirit-like alcoholiness from the short aging, the strong peat and sweet barrel notes seem to mask these elements. The finish is sufficiently well-balanced, but honestly, I would have liked a bit more aging to enhance the maturity. Considering the limited time frame for creating something delicious, this might be as good as they could manage. The company (GM) must have many good barrels, so I'm looking forward to future releases.
Additionally, there was a slight concern about the floating peat and the flat sweetness characteristic of wine casks. However, this disjointed feeling might eventually coalesce into a unified experience.
I'd like to try it again after about a year from when I opened the bottle. This bottle was kindly provided by Oidvi in Sagamihara.
