New Release: Springbank 21 Year Old Official for Germany 47.5%
#スプリングバンク(SPRINGBANK)
I prefer the Hogs version, I suppose.
Springbank SPRINGBANK 21yo OB for GERMANY 47.5%
one of 324 bottles, Oloroso Sherry Hogshead
The aroma is strong sherry, grape juice with skins, raisins with stems, berry jam, bitter chocolate, caramel, roasted barley, nuts, herbs, and some peat. It feels rich.
When drinking, it starts with a smooth mouthfeel that expands into a concentrated, satisfying flavor. The sherry is rich and deep, with notes of berry jam and grape, along with concentrated fruits, bitter chocolate, a thick sweet jam-like quality, astringent tannins, roasted barley with some smoky umami, and a touch of peat. The finish is rich and long.
【Very Good】
This Springbank 21yo official bottling is released as a single cask for multiple markets starting this year. This one is for Germany, and it shares the same specifications as the previously introduced Belgium version, both being Oloroso Sherry Hogshead.
Compared to the sherry butt versions for Japan and the UK in the same series, this clearly shows stronger influence from the sherry cask.
Depending on the barrel specifications, hogsheads are generally considered to allow for more maturation and flavor development than butts. In terms of sherry impact, the aroma and taste were similar to the Belgium version, which is also a hogshead of the same specification.
Notes of concentrated fruits like grapes with skins and stems, berry jam, and bitter chocolate were clearly present in both the aroma and flavor.
While the strong sherry character slightly masked the seaweed-like mineral notes, the peat still came through with a 90s Bank-like character.
Since the Belgium version is no longer available, I couldn't do a direct comparison, but this German release was equally delicious and held its own against the Belgium version.
