BOWMORE Official Bicentenary for Japan 43%

BOWMORE OB Bicentenary for Japan 43%
Bottle #ボウモア(BOWMORE)
It has been a long time since I last drank it, but as expected, it is still wonderful. BOWMORE OB Bicentenary for Japan 43% The aroma has a captivating old sherry, grape juice, cognac, light earthy notes reminiscent of leaf mold, a hint of leather, and a mature yet strong peat. When drinking, it starts with a smooth, refined mouthfeel, expanding into a seductive sherry note with old wine nuances and grape juice freshness. There is a refined sweetness and bitterness, and the finish strengthens with earthy and peaty elements, leaving a long, captivating aftertaste. [Very Good/Excellent] This bottle was released in 1979 to commemorate BOWMORE's 200th anniversary, the so-called bicentenary. It is known that there are several types. For example, bottles with a 1964 vintage label, those without such labels like this one, and square bottles for Italy as single cask strength. I have not encountered these others, but they are said to exist. This bottle is a Japanese version produced by Sanyo Shuho. I have heard it was vatted from the 1950s and 1960s, but I am not certain. This bottle is one I had drunk a few times long ago and was moved by its quality, but hadn't tasted it since. I was very much looking forward to this tasting. There is a captivating sherry note in both the aroma and flavor, with nuances of fresh grape juice. At the same time, there is a refined cognac-like note and old wine-like grape characteristics. Additionally, the peat with an earthy quality often found in pre-1960s whiskies is still present, though it has a matured feel but retains its strength without being overly soft. Perhaps aided by the water addition, it has an elegant balance of sweetness and bitterness. It was a continuously captivating experience from start to finish. Recently, I have often felt that older water-added bottles of this specification lack a certain freshness or seem overly matured, but this bottle surpassed that feeling and provided satisfaction. While bottles in poor condition may exist for this specification, this one is in excellent condition. I was very happy to be able to taste it at this time. #BOWMORE (BOWMORE)
