The aroma is strong sherry with notes of dried fruits, prunes, bitter chocolate-coated orange, black sugar, roasted barley, nuts, herbs, and a sweet richness.
On the palate, it expands powerfully with intense fruitiness from dried oranges and prunes, a rich jam-like sweetness, tannins that provide structure, good woodiness, and a long, luxurious finish. [Good/Very Good]
This is a Family Cask bottling of Glenfarclas released this year by Shinanoya. The vintage is 1990, aged for approximately 25 years.
Previously released Family Cask bottlings for Shinanoya, such as the 1991 vintage, were highly appreciated for their sherry cask character. This bottling naturally generated high expectations.
On the nose, it delivers a solid sherry influence as expected, with nuances of concentrated dark fruits and bitter chocolate-coated orange, alongside clear notes of black sugar and herbs. While the barley character is somewhat masked by sherry, it still remains present.
On the palate, it has a powerful expansion with intense fruity sweetness similar to the nose, along with strong woodiness and tannins that provide structure. The flavor profile is well-defined.
Compared to the 1991 vintage, this bottling has even less sulfuric elements and a slightly stronger sherry cask character.
Compared to the 1991, this bottling has less acidity in its sweet-and-sour balance, with the 1990 showing a stronger sherry character and cask influence. The 1991, however, felt more complex and balanced.
This is a bottle that fully showcases the personality of the sherry cask.
As expected from Shinanoya, they've secured an excellent cask!
