Petit SBT 2014/10 from naoskprs sample B
Bottle #ボウモア(BOWMORE) #SBT
Three types of blind samples arrived from my malt friend naoskprs. I was grateful and challenged myself.
Next is sample B.
(What follows are the tasting notes from a blind tasting.)
・Petit SBT 2014/10 from naoskprs sample B
The aroma has strong tropical fruits like passion fruit, grapefruit, pineapple, green apple, and peat with a smoky character, vanilla, and dry malt.
When drinking it, the tropical notes of passion fruit are similar to the aroma, with syrup sweetness, citrus acidity, and peat. It feels young, with a planty and malty character, slightly oily, sea breeze, and light seafood dashi.
【G/VG】
This unique tropical passion fruit note and peat make me think of Bowmore or Ardmore from the 1990s. However, considering the nuances of seawater and light paper-like texture, Bowmore is my first guess. If that's the case, I predict the vintage to be around late 1990s to early 2000s, with about 15 years of aging. The cask is expected to be a refilled bourbon hogshead.
Although it feels young, the alcohol strength isn't too harsh. It might be around 50%.
・Prediction:
1. Bowmore
2. None
3. Ardmore
I sent my tasting notes and predictions via email.
The correct answer was...
Bowmore BOWMORE 1993-2010 17yo THE WHISKY AGENCY The Perfect Dram 4th 54.6%
one of 226 bottles, EX-Bourbon Hogshead
The Perfect Dram from The Whisky Agency was the fourth release of Bowmore 1993. Although I correctly guessed the distillery and cask type, I was quite shocked that I missed the vintage. I recognized that Bowmore has a strong fruity character, but I overemphasized the light paper-like texture and made an incorrect prediction.
I have a tendency to overestimate disliked elements, which I've been reflecting on. Still, there's room for improvement.
Additionally, I had tasted this bottle before, but at that time, the paper-like texture didn't bother me. It's possible I overreacted to a generally unnoticed element, which shows some bias in my tasting.
I need to be more conscious and make adjustments. Recognizing and re-evaluating my own biases might be one of the benefits of blind tasting.
