Mini SBT 2014/October from naoskprs Sample C
Bottle #ラフロイグ(LAPHROAIG) #SBT
Three blind samples were kindly sent by my malt friend naoskprs. I had the pleasure of tasting them, and this is the final sample C.
(Contents below are based on blind tasting):
・Mini SBT 2014/October from naoskprs Sample C
Aroma: Mild old-aged character, grapefruit pith, passion fruit, white grapes, melon, dry barley notes, green apple, matcha, ginkgo, condensed texture with strong peat.
Palate: Concentrated, powdery texture with chewiness, grapefruit pith, passion fruit, ham melon, strong sweetness, rich body, nuts, umami depth, intense peat with faint charcoal notes, slight tar.
【G/VG】
The concentrated citrusy peat character makes me think of Laphroaig and peaty Springbank. While the fruity direction resembles old GlenDronach, it's too peaty. If Laphroaig is the first guess, considering the charcoal nuances in the peat suggests it might be a special fruity bottling from late 1980s. Aged in refill casks, around 50-55% ABV.
・Guesses:
1. Laphroaig
2. Springbank
3. None
I sent my tasting notes and predictions via email.
The correct answer was...
Laphroaig LAPHROAIG 1993 14yo Douglas of Drumlanrig 51.1%
This was a 1993 Laphroaig bottled around seven years ago by Douglas of Drumlanrig. While the distillery guess was correct, my prediction about the specs wasn't quite right. Despite being a seven-year-old bottling, it felt more mature, like an older bottle. The concentrated powdery texture is typical of early 1980s Laphroaig, but I've often encountered this characteristic in late 1980s bottlings like this 1993. The smoky nuances with recent charcoal notes led me to guess late 1980s, but upon reflection, the 1993 vintage makes perfect sense. The stronger old-world nuances probably influenced that vintage guess. It's a beloved distillery and a bottle type I enjoy, so I'd have liked to get the specs right too.
Thank you again to naoskprs for sharing this rare bottle.
